Challenge

FairPrice Group needed to personalize the shopping experience for 1 million daily customers across 570 touchpoints in Singapore's multilingual market, while reducing creative production costs and equipping employees with AI tools—without the engineering resources typical of a technology company.

Solution

FairPrice deployed Google Cloud agentic AI across four dimensions: in-cart shopping assistants using Chirp 2 and Gemini API, Vertex AI Search with RAG Engine for culturally-aware inventory queries, Imagen 4 and Veo 3 for automated creative production, and Gemini Enterprise for employee productivity—all orchestrated via Google ADK on Vertex AI.

Full Story

FairPrice Group operates Singapore's largest grocery and food cooperative, serving more than 1 million customers every day through 570 retail touchpoints. With a mandate to serve all Singaporeans—from budget-conscious families to premium shoppers—the organization needed technology that could personalize the shopping experience at scale while preserving operational efficiency across a complex multi-format retail network.

In Q3 2025, FairPrice launched its 'Store of Tomorrow' program in partnership with Google Cloud, deploying multiple agentic AI systems across customer-facing and back-office operations simultaneously.

The centerpiece was an in-cart conversational shopping assistant built using Google's Chirp 2 speech recognition model and the Gemini API. Customers interact naturally with the assistant while shopping; the system interprets queries, understands local Singaporean context, and surfaces relevant products with personalized recommendations. The assistant achieved an 18% click rate—a strong signal of customer adoption in a traditionally transactional retail environment.

For inventory and product discovery, FairPrice deployed Vertex AI Search with a RAG Engine that understands localized product terminology. When a customer searches for 'Orh Nee,' the system correctly interprets the Hokkien term for Yam Paste and returns accurate inventory results rather than failing on unrecognized language. This local cultural competence is critical in Singapore's multilingual market.

On the creative side, FairPrice replaced a manual advertising production process with Imagen 4 for static ad generation and Veo 3 for video content. The result was a 10x speed improvement and 100x cost reduction in creative asset production, enabling the marketing team to run higher-cadence campaigns without proportional budget increases.

Employee productivity tools built on Gemini Enterprise and Google Workspace give store staff and corporate employees AI-assisted workflows for scheduling, communications, and operational queries. Specialized agents include a wine sommelier assistant for premium product recommendations and a wellness assistant that integrates with Tanita body composition data through the Gemini API.

The entire agentic infrastructure was built using Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK) and orchestrated through Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform, giving FairPrice a unified foundation to extend AI capabilities across additional touchpoints as the program matures.
