How Blue Pearl Uses IBM Bob to Cut Java Modernization from 30 Days to 3

Blue Pearl operates at the intersection of cloud consulting and AI-driven platform development. Its flagship product, BlueApp, is a high-volume consultant-matching platform that uses search, workflow automation, and machine learning ranking to connect enterprise clients with specialized talent. As the platform grew in scale and complexity, its technical foundation became a constraint on both security and delivery speed.

The engineering team was running on Java 11, a version no longer on a modern Long-Term Support baseline. This meant the platform missed cumulative security fixes, modern JVM concurrency improvements, and access to APIs that had replaced deprecated ones. Dependency incompatibilities slowed development cycles and added maintenance overhead. Every sprint carried the quiet cost of working around a stack that was increasingly out of alignment with where the industry had moved.

Blue Pearl selected IBM Bob, IBM’s AI-powered SDLC partner, to handle the Java 11 to 25 LTS uplift. IBM Bob performed architecture-aware analysis of the existing codebase, identified deprecated APIs and compatibility issues, and generated automated refactoring aligned with Blue Pearl’s existing design patterns and internal libraries. The upgrade was structured as a three-day delivery motion: Day 1 for assessment and dependency scanning, Day 2 for refactoring and stabilization, Day 3 for testing, performance benchmarking, security validation, and monitored deployment. Engineering teams maintained control through governance checkpoints and CI/CD validation gates throughout.

The result was a ~90% reduction in delivery time — from approximately 30 days to three. Blue Pearl preserved more than 160 engineering hours that would have been consumed by manual refactoring, and the deployment entered production with zero post-deployment defects during the initial stabilization window. Performance benchmarks showed approximately 15% faster response times across key workflows, and the platform’s security posture improved materially with the move to a modern LTS baseline.

The project did more than modernize a single codebase. Blue Pearl packaged the three-day delivery motion as a repeatable offering it can extend to clients, opening 15–20 new opportunities for similar Java modernization engagements. The company and IBM are exploring joint workshops to identify further quick-win modernization candidates across Blue Pearl’s portfolio, using this engagement as the reference point for what AI-assisted technical uplift can look like in practice.
