How Lockheed Martin Uses IBM watsonx to Unify 46 Data Systems into One AI Platform

Lockheed Martin, a global aerospace and defense technology leader, struggled with data silos spread across multiple data lakes and 46 disparate systems for data management, analytics, and business intelligence. This fragmentation hindered enterprise-wide data accessibility and prevented the company from leveraging AI at scale.

IBM helped Lockheed Martin replace all 46 disconnected systems with a single integrated platform, establishing a unified, scalable data foundation. This consolidation enabled the creation of a secure AI Factory where 10,000 engineers can build and deploy large-scale AI solutions using IBM Granite open AI models.

The platform leverages IBM watsonx.data for unified data management, IBM watsonx.governance for AI model oversight, and IBM watsonx Orchestrate for workflow automation. Generative AI models built with watsonx allow natural language queries across enterprise data, while conversational chatbots handle HR and employee inquiries.

The results demonstrate significant efficiency gains: a 50% reduction in data and AI tools, 216 automated data catalog definitions, and measurable improvements in AI accuracy — from a 45.45% baseline to 56.8% through prompt engineering (11% increase) and 66.0% through query optimization (20% boost). Lockheed Martin is now moving toward a data-driven culture where employees can immediately make use of enterprise data for decision-making.
